NARRATOR: The same SCDS as used by Ford in millions of vehicle have been voluntarily recalled because of their dangerously defective propensity to start fires. However the same defective switch in many millions more unrecalled Ford trucks on the streets today continues to imperil countless innocent families.
The cause of this fire was a catastrophic failure of the speed control deactivation switch, or SCDS. The cruise control switch contact severely overheated, became molten, exploded and ignited the switch's plastic case and spread to burn the vehicle, the home and all its contents.
Ford discontinued the use of the defective $21 Texas Instrument switch in 2002 after a decade of use. The switches are dangerous and deadly fire hazards. They have electricity running through them even after the vehicle's ignition is turned off, potentially causing them to self-ignite into violent brake fuel-fed fires in the dead of night, oftentimes when parked in a family's garage.
